What are the differences between hotels and motels?
After World War II, the word motel (mix of the words motor and hotel- or "motorists" hotel) entered dictionaries referring to a single building of connected rooms whose doors face a parking lot. After World War II, increased driving distances occurred on the United States highway. Motels were part of the system that allowed easier cross-country travel. Motels are often the backdrop of horror movies, such as the Bates Hotel in the movie Psycho or the Pinewood Motel from the movie Vacancy. A difference between hotels and motels is that motels tend to have a more negative reputation. For example, in South Asia, motels are known to be paid by the hour for the purpose of sexual trysts. Also, amongst hotels and motels, motels tend to be cheaper than hotels.
A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, typically on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services, such as a restaurant, a swimming pool, or childcare. Some hotels have conference services and meeting rooms which encourage organizations to hold conventions and meetings at their location. A difference between hotels and motels are that hotels are known to be much larger with many more amenities and luxuries than motels.
You can transform any search engine into an online hotel finder. You can also search for hotels and motels on one of many travel sites booking (Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, etc). Sites offer options, such as pet friendly hotels and extended stay hotels. You can find anything from Myrtle Beach hotels to the Treehouse Hotel, much like the Costa Rica Tree House with living trees as structural elements.
Extended hotels do exist at bargain prices, but there have been wealthy people who have been known to have become so accustomed to hotels that they live there for long periods of time. Examples are American billionaire Howard Hughes who lived much of his life in hotels to Coco Chanel who lived in the Hotel Ritz in Paris for thirty years until the day of her death. The modern day magician Chris Angel currently lives in the presidential suite of the Luxor hotel. A difference between hotels and motels is that people with disposable income lavish themselves in the amenities of hotels, but are not known to stay at hotels.
